Lip augmentation procedures increase the size of the lips to make them fuller and more attractive. The procedure is used to help women and men of all ages. The upper or lower lip may be treated singly, or both upper and lower lips may augment at the same time.
Lip augmentations have become increasingly popular in recent years. Some types of lip augmentation involve the insertion of natural or synthetic materials.
How is the procedure done ?
The procedure is performed through the use of fat injections and different types of fillers. Long time ago doctors started this procedure using collagen which is protein derived from cow skin .
So pretesting for allergy was mandatory but with mad cow disease. Collagen is no longer used. So recently we are using non animal derived synthetic materials which is no previous testing and no side effects and lasting for certain times .
What are the types of fillers and how the method of injection ?
- we can use the patient's own fat that can be suctioned from her hips or lower abdomen under local anesthesia but 80 – 90% of the fat used for injection will be absorbed in a short period of time and this fat injection needs to be repeated for 3 – 5 times. So the best results are obtained with other fillers specially hyoluronic acid .
- Hyoluronic acid is a famous material named in the market by restylen. Fevoderm is available in our clinic and lasts about a6months .
- Polyacrylmide gel, which last for about 2 years available under the name of Asteform and aqua med. The procedure is done on an out-patient basis by direct injection of the material under the mucous membrane. With gentle massage for smooth distribution of the material .
What to expect after the procedure ?
The result will appear immediately after injection with some swelling and bruising which can last from 24 – 48 hours, no change in sensation, no long side effects. When healed your lips will be soft to touch and will feel normal .
